ISIOLO: NOMINATED MCA SUMEYA BISHAR LAUNCHES PHASE 1 OF 'ACCESS TO CLEAN WATER' PROGRAM AIMED AT DROUGHT MITIGATION

More than 30 community groups, mosques, churches, madrassas and a number of households have received a generous donation in form of water tanks from Hon. Sumeya Bishar, a nominated MCA who has taken early measures to ensure the vulnerable members of the society such as women and people living with disabilities do not suffer in the likely event of adverse weather.

Isiolo county has been flagged as one of the counties which is faced with an all-year-round water scarcity hence the tanks which come in 500 and 1000 litre volumes shall come in handy when the drought season hits where every drop usually counts.

The first phase of the program was successfully launched at her residence in Kiwanjani and attended by among other her fellow MCA Hon. Abdi Halake Kunune and Garbatulla MCA aspirant Hon. Bonaya Boru Bonaya.
One of the event coordinators that we spoke to Mr. Harun Hussein says that phase 2 of the program shall be rolled out in a few months time and shall target more households.
He also adds that community groups from all the sub counties in Isiolo county have so far benefitted from Phase one of the program.

The beneficiaries of the donations that we managed to speak to have said they are very grateful to the MCA for her revolutionary idea saying water storage facilities has been their biggest challenge for years as most of the vulnerable folks cannot afford such high capacity storage amenities and the few 20ltrs containers they have cannot sustain them for long hence requires to be refilled frequently, woe unto you if water isn't available!
They say this will be a major relief especially for school going girls in most local households as they are the ones faced with the humongous task of trekking long distances to ensure the family gets enough water for domestic and other uses, a task that comes with countless hazards as more often than not, they have to go through heavy thickets and forests to reach the available wells or rivers.
'The high capacity water tanks they have received is expected to drastically reduce such treks and girls will have enough time to revise for their school work', says a middle aged woman from Ngaremara who is one of the beneficiaries of the program.

ICBN has also noted that water scarcity is no longer an issue limited to rural areas in Isiolo county but is a major threat in Isiolo township as well.
Most areas within Isiolo town have not seen a drop in their taps, some claim for over three months and has been an issue that icbn has been looking into especially with allegations of IWASCO falling to cartels. More shall come your way concerning the same.

On the brighter side, we congratulate Hon. Sumeiya for leading from the front in ensuring the citizenry is well prepared for an eventual drought season as the short rains come short!

We shall let you keep up to date with the progress of this ambitious program.
